Bright. Fresh. Sophisticated. Layered. Eclectic. Personal.
These are often the elements that we try to incorporate in each of our designs. Living rooms are one of the most important spaces in a home and they should feel both inviting as well as refreshing. It is often the area where people gather, it is a place to relax and unwind, and it is a space that expresses who you are. Below we share our top five key points to consider when creating your living room... one that everyone wants to be in and tries to recreate for their own!
1. Set the mood with a crisp and clean background.
We love starting off a space with a clean background. A white base always brightens a room and makes it instantly feel more fresh and contemporary. This also lets light reflect within the space and allows the rest of the elements in the living room to really make a statement.
2. Clean lines add sophistication and balance to the space.
Everything in your space needs to flow. Incorporating streamlined elements in your living room is so critical—there needs to be a place for one’s eye to rest. Usually we start off our designs by gathering a few clean-lined furniture pieces and then layer in other components from there. We typically prefer to use sleeker sofas and coffee tables mixed in with more eclectic accent pieces.
3. Layer in subtle touches of pattern and color.
We definitely have a slight obsession when it comes to pattern and color. As of lately, we are in love with everything striped and floral... we just can’t get enough! Pattern and color can be layered throughout a space in so many different ways. Whether it is color in an art piece, elegantly patterned pillows on a sofa, a soft touch of color in an area rug or even a fully patterned upholstered chair. Variety is key. Adding subtle touches of these two elements is so crucial to the overall finished aesthetic of a space.
4. Mix in some traditional/antique pieces to add a softer feel.
Mixing in a traditional piece of furniture with more contemporary pieces adds warmth and depth to your home. Whether you accent your space with a more traditional rug, chandelier or piece of art as shown in the images above, you can never go wrong by adding just a touch! It is the contrast between these elements that really complements a room and makes it more interesting.
5. Always accessorize your space with personal items that reflect you.
Accessories should not be an afterthought. Sometimes these pieces can be understated, but these are the items that truly make the space YOURS. Accessories tell guests who you are and should reflect you and your interests. It’s important to keep in mind that the goal is to add a few thoughtful hints of yourself throughout the room, making sure not to over clutter.
