Today we are talking all about shiplap! This is a construction technique that has been around a long time, but has become a more decorative feature over the last few years. Let's be real...everyone's got to love Chip and Joanna Gaines' "Fixer Upper." Their passion for shiplap is no secret, and has helped bring about their signature design style. Although you can never go wrong with a generic shiplap, some people may want a more contemporary look instead of an all-out farmhouse feel. We have put together some of our favorite modern uses of shiplap that can transform any space and add a great focal point to any room.
1. Shiplap in an Unexpected Location
We love adding shiplap to areas you wouldn't always expect it to be used, such as in a laundry room or mudroom. Rather than using shiplap everywhere, limiting the use to one specific area makes it feel more special and unique. This becomes a great surprise for guests when they explore new areas of your home. For a more modern and fresh look, paint the shiplap white. This allows for the space to feel more open and airy while still adding a slight visual texture.
2. In a Cabinet or Niche
Shiplap is a great touch to add to any cabinet or niche. This adds an unexpected element to an area that is usually kept more simple. We love the use in a bed or window niche, pantry, and even in cabinets. It is typically best to keep the shiplap white in this application as well so that you add a subtle texture to the space without taking away from any items that you are displaying. Another idea that is shown in a couple of the images above is to install the shiplap vertically for a fun surprise!
3. Dark Color and Different Sized Planks
Another great way to modernize shiplap is to play with both the color and sizing. If you're looking to add a touch of sophistication to a space try either applying a dark stain or painting the shiplap dark. Using wider planks or playing with the groove spacing are other ways to experiment with this design element. Mix all of these together and you will be sure to add some character to any room.
4. On the Ceiling
One of our favorite uses of shiplap is on the ceiling! This is such a great way to add a little personality to a space. Whether you go for a more rustic all-natural look, a modern gray or white painted ceiling or add a fun touch of color (like the pink in the little girls room above), you just can't go wrong!
There are so many ways to use shiplap in a more contemporary way. We would love to hear your thoughts and how you like to use it yourself. Are there any other design trends you would like us to talk about? We would love to hear from you in the comments below!
